When I was pregnant with Brian, John mentioned trying cloth diapers. With the image of the old, white cloth pre-fold diapers, large diaper pins and noisy plastic covers I was completely closed to the idea. The thought of swishing out a poopy diaper in the toilet completely disgusted me. I would have sworn at the time that I would under no circumstances ever consider using cloth diapers.
Well, here we are awaiting the birth of our 4th and 5th babies. Up until about 2 months ago I remained completely closed to the idea until I realized that soon we will have 3 in diapers. The thought of paying for enough diapers for 3 was enough to push me to consider cloth diapers.
There are several women in our ward that use cloth diapers. I spoke with each of them about it and they all swore that, if I would give it a chance, I would like using them. One of the women in our ward even offered to lend me some so I wouldn't have the up front cost - just in case I didn't like them. With no more excuses I decided to give it a try.
I have been using cloth diapers on Anne-Loren for a little over a week now. And... cloth diapers definitely aren't what they used to be. There are a million different kinds of diapers and so many ways cloth diapering is easier than it used to be. With All-in-one diapers plastic covers aren't even necessary. The have made "snappis" - a contraption kind of like what is used to hold an ace bandage closed - to use with the old pre-fold diapers so the pins aren't necessary. The plastic covers aren't so bulky or noisy any more. Actually, they can be pretty cute. We even have a small hand held sprayer that hooks right onto the toilet, so if the flushable liner happens to not contain everything I don't have to swish the diaper in the toilet.
So, all in all I have been pleasantly surprised and will be using cloth diapers for all three of the youngest. (Except when we travel. I don't think I am brave enough to conquer that yet)
